Brief description of the programme
Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation’s Exploration Grants aim to provide young investigator group leaders doing basic research in biology, chemistry, and medicine with the financial latitude to ask unusual questions and explore new territory. Projects are supposed to open a new research direction and should thus be high-risk.
Research group leaders (with at least two years of experience) may apply for a one-off grant of up to 210,000 EUR, disbursed over a period of 2 years, for projects that offer the potential to initiate a new research direction in their laboratory. The grant covers salary of a post-doctoral researcher and consumables.
The selection process generally takes around 6 months, projects are supposed to start within 6 months of the date of the approval letter.
Eligibility criteria (not limited to):
- PhD awarded less than 10 years prior to the application deadline
- Substantial international experience
- Research focus on fundamental questions in the biological, medical, and chemical sciences. A clear link to the life sciences is required
- Leading of an independent research group at an academic institution in Germany for at least 2 years
There are two deadlines each year: 15 March and 15 September. The online application opens four weeks prior to the deadlines.
