Study

How Cells Remodel Their Membranes – Without Any Energy Supply

For life to function, cell membranes must remain intact. When these fragile barriers are damaged – for instance by heat or viral attack – specialized proteins come to the rescue. Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the University of Mainz have now, for the first time, uncovered the mechanism of action of one such protective protein, PspA, which belongs to the ESCRT-III superfamily.

Dr Rebecka Molitor wins KlarText Prize

Dr Rebecka Molitor has been named one of the winners of the 2025 KlarText Prize for Science Communication, awarded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation. In her German article “„Die Tiefsee: Müllkippe oder Hoffnungsträger?“ which translates as “The Deep Sea: Rubbish Dump or Beacon of Hope?”, she compellingly describes how biotechnology could help tackle one of the world’s most pressing problems: plastic pollution.

Bioelectronics

Light-sensitive materials mimic synapses in the brain

In collaboration with RWTH Aachen University, a research team from Jülich has developed a new type of organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT). These tiny devices convert light into electrical signals and mimic the behaviour of synapses in the brain. This technology could be used in visual prostheses and other medical devices in the future.

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.
