Institute for Biological Information processing (IBI)

The Institute of Complex Systems (ICS) has a new name: Institute of Biological Information Processing (IBI). The divisions were also renamed. The information on this website is gradually being updated.

Cells sense and integrate external signals in order to adapt to environmental changes and to communicate with other cells and organisms.

Evolution has generated information processing mechanisms that are radically different from current information technology.

We use experimental, theoretical and computational methods to understand the molecular and cellular hardware, computational rules and algorithms of biological information processing.

Our long-term goal is to provide a comprehensive quantitative understanding of biological information processing and to contribute to the generation of revolutionary new technological concepts in information technology.

Managing Director

Prof. Dr. Jan K. G. Dhont (IBI-4)
Deputy: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Gompper (IBI-5 / IAS-2)
