Professor Amelung has been Director of the Institute of Agrosphere at Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany since 2011. In this role, he leads interdisciplinary research projects on the effects of climate change and land use changes on terrestrial ecosystems. He investigates the mechanisms that lead to soil degradation, develops innovative methods for sustainable land use with his team, and studies nutrient cycles and the behaviour of pollutants in soils. Professor Amelung is also a member of the PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence, which is researching robotics and phenotyping for sustainable plant production and is a professor of soil science and soil ecology at the University of Bonn, Germany. He was inducted into the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2022 and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts in 2024. Amelung was listed as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2024, underlining his significant scientific achievements.

The Philippe Duchaufour Medal has been awarded by the EGU since 2005 for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of soil science. It honours scientists who have significantly advanced the understanding of soil processes through their research.

The award ceremony will take place during the EGU General Assembly in Vienna in April 2025. Forschungszentrum Jülich warmly congratulates Professor Wulf Amelung on this award and thanks him for his commitment to research and teaching.
