A turbo for artificial intelligence

Computers consume large amounts of energy, as data storage and processing take place in separate components. As an alternative, researchers from Jülich now want to develop economical chips modelled on nature. The technology offers many opportunities, especially for AI applications.

Supercomputer Made in Jülich Setting New Benchmarks

Forschungszentrum Jülich and its partners have built the most powerful supercomputer in Europe with unparalleled flexibility and energy efficiency. Jülich’s upgraded supercomputer JUWELS is now capable of 85 petaflops. This is equivalent to 85 quadrillion computing operations per second or the computing power of more than 300,000 modern PCs.

Causing Continued Concern: Forests

It has been too dry and warm in Germany for the third year in a row. Many trees are suffering, especially spruce. One of the consequences: they are more susceptible to pests. Jülich researchers are observing the development in the Eifel and measuring the effects, for example on the atmosphere’s CO2 content.

Micrometre by Micrometre: Decoding the Human Brain with AI

The starting signal has been given: the German-Canadian Helmholtz International BigBrain Analytics and Learning Laboratory (HIBALL) takes up its work. The goal: a three-dimensional brain atlas at a cellular resolution level. The method: the close integration of artificial intelligence, supercomputing and neuroscience. Involved are: more than 40 scientists.
