Beyond Beauty: Skin as a Platform for Bioelectronic Innovation

About

I am a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow and YESP member working in the Neuroelectronic Interfaces Lab led by Prof. Dr. Francesca Santoro at the Institute of Bioelectronics (IBI-3). My research focuses on developing next-generation bioelectronic platforms that interface with engineered human skin tissue, with the ultimate goal of enabling real-time, non-destructive monitoring of tissue health and disease progression.

I currently lead the BioKIN project, where I design and fabricate sensorized skin equivalents by integrating multimodal sensors (electrical and electrochemical) into 3D tissue-engineered constructs. These smart skin platforms combine microfabrication, stretchable electronics, and advanced biomaterials to generate dynamic readouts of barrier function, wound healing, and therapeutic responses. The resulting technologies have strong potential for applications in regenerative medicine, drug screening, and personalized diagnostics. Bridging the fields of bioelectronics, microtechnology, and tissue engineering, my work lies at the frontier of soft and adaptive interfaces. By leveraging mesh electronics, smart patches, and flexible sensor arrays, I aim to enable continuous feedback from bioengineered skin—paving the way for more predictive, patient-relevant health technologies.

While BioKIN is currently focused on skin sensing, I am actively exploring the future integration of neural components, aiming to reconstruct aspects of the skin–brain axis in vitro. This direction will allow us to model sensory innervation, decode neuro-epidermal communication, and explore new bioelectronic therapies for chronic wounds and neurogenic skin disorders.

I’m always happy to welcome motivated students interested in internships or final projects. Feel free to reach out if you are curious about bioelectronics, soft sensors, or tissue-engineered skin platforms. I'm open to both current and self-proposed project ideas.
