Neuroscientists generate ever greater amounts of data. Some of the data sets are so large that they can no longer be processed and analysed with conventional computers. To handle such large data sets, we utilise artificial intelligence (AI) and large computing structures.erstrukturen.

The research platform Helmholtz AI at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) supports work at this intersection of AI, high-performance computing (HPC) and neuroscience.

The focus of Helmholtz AI at FZJ is on AI methods for biomedical image analysis and efficient machine learning with large-scale data and models. Many of the methods and solutions developed in our teams do not just benefit neuroscience and medical applications but are transferable across different tasks and scientific domains. Helmholtz AI at FZJ is implemented with a research group at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (Structural and functional organisation of the brain - INM-1) and the Helmholtz AI Consultant team at JSC.

Helmholtz AI at Forschungszentrum Jülich also aims to build a forum to connect different AI experts on campus.

Artificial Intelligence helps researchers decode the organization of the human brain

The focus of the Helmholtz AI research group at FZJ is on deep-learning methods for microstructural object detection and multimodal texture analysis in high throughput imaging settings with limited training data. As image resolutions and data volumes are continuously increasing, the team is developing new methods for operation on HPC systems. This work is embedded into the research at INM-1 on human brain organization on its different scales.

Consultant Team

Helmholtz AI consultant teams ensure translation of expertise into the immediate research domain of their respective units. The Helmholtz AI consultant team at FZJ represents the research field ‘Information’ and is associated with exciting research domains such as neuroscience, quantum computing and material science. We support scientists with our AI competence in all phases of their projects: from sketch, through implementation to communication.

Computing Resources

HAICORE: computing resources for the Helmholtz AI community

Access to computing resources is key for the Helmholtz AI community to accelerate innovative AI applications. HAICORE provide easy and low-barrier access to graphics processing units (GPUs) for the entire AI community within the Helmholtz Association. Dedicated compute clusters are installed and managed at FZJ and KIT. Together, the AI consultant teams at KIT and FZJ support the HAICORE users by providing testing and benchmarking the infrastructure, preparing and maintaining AI-related software installations and with first level support.
