The Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Troposphere (IEK-8), investigates the chemical and physical processes in the troposphere that impact the chemical composition of the atmosphere. On the one hand side the processes are studied by field measurements and chamber experiments, where different working groups deal with different aspects, as photochemistry and radicals, reactive trace substances or aerosols. On the other hand side, the modellers group uses and develops the Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) which allows for chemical studies in highly variable degrees of complexity, i.e. box model or 3d global and regional chemistry climate simulations. In order to improve the overall understanding of tropospheric chemistry processes, the link between the experimental and the modelling tools should be strengthened.

PhD position - Atmospheric Sciences: Development of a multiphase chemical box model for the analysis of chamber and field experiments

Your Job:

The MESSy software https://www.messy-interface.org/ provides the ideal basis for the application of process description and diagnostics (coded as so-called submodels) within different kind of models. While most members of the MESSy consortium work with 3d global and regional models, in this project the same MESSy infrastructure and the process submodels will be used to develop a 0d (maybe 1d) model for the analysis of atmospheric chamber experiments. The idea is to take advantage of the already existing infrastructure (e.g., data import and output), process submodels (i.e. multiphase kinetics and gas-aerosol partitioning) and diagnostics submodels. In this way, new findings from the analysis of chamber experiments can be directly applied also within the 3d models. Analysing chamber and field experiments with this tool will enable to advance our knowledge in radical chemistry and assess its global impacts (3d) on the atmospheric oxidation capacity and aerosol formation.

Your tasks in detail:
Starting from a technically working atmospheric chemistry box model, your task will be to further develop the box model in order to provide boundary conditions and include process descriptions relevant for the respective chamber experiments.
The aim of this project is to expand an atmospheric chemistry box model with a technical infrastructure for the standardized provision of boundary conditions and driving data and proof its functionality by the analysis of chamber experiments performed at IEK-8. In order to facilitate the analysis of the model results additional on-line diagnostics should be developed and implemented in the MESSy software.

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences or a related field (e.g. computer science, mathematics) with good final grade (German system equivalent 2.0 or better)
  • Very good numerical and programming skills are essential; knowledge of Fortran and experience with a Linux/Unix environment are of advantage
  • Knowledge of (atmospheric) chemistry and/or atmospheric sciences is of Advantage
  • Knowledge about measurement techniques is another plus
  • Good skills in data evaluation using mathematical script routines
  • Ability to work in an international team, good skills in the spoken and written English language
