Divisions
Forschungszentrum Jülich generates approximately 400 million euros in third-party funding annually. The majority results from research and development activities for industry, from the acquisition of funding from Germany and abroad, and from project sponsorships on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The External Funding Management (D) division supports the scientific institutes and organisational units of Forschungszentrum Jülich in applying for, calculating, coordinating and accounting for all third-party funding activities. In addition, the External Funding Management division is responsible for the contract management of research and development contracts.
The Purchasing and Materials Management division has the task of ensuring a smooth and economic flow of all goods - from the purchase of goods to their utilisation.
This includes the procurement of all goods and services required by the researchers and administrative staff, as well as checking the certificates for the manufacture of semi-finished products and maintaining the warehouse catalogues. In addition, the management of the warehouses, the distribution of goods within Forschungszentrum Jülich and the organisation of national and international shipping of goods are the responsibility of the business unit.

Finance and Controlling, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH’s financial management division, sees itself as a finance process manager and central service provider for all finance-related processes and services made available to science and infrastructure.

The Helmholtz Nano Facility (HNF) is a state-of-the art cleanroom facility with 1000 m2 cleanroom of classes ISO 1-3. The HNF operates according to VDI DIN 2083 and DIN EN ISO 14644. The HNF is ISO 9001 certified.
The HNF is the supplier of micro- and nanostructures for all departments of the Research Centre Jülich, its cooperation partners and external customers. This is done either as a user facility via training on the job or in service.
The IT Services (ITS) division is a central service provider for information and communication technology at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Through high-quality and economical services, ITS provides optimal support for the business processes of customers in scientific and administrative organisational units.
To this end, ITS operates central server infrastructures and offers services such as e-mail services, internet and intranet services as well as file and print services.
Another focus is the support of workstation computers over the entire lifecycle.
Our service desk, staffed with qualified employees, is the central point of contact for IT-related questions and tasks.
The service offer is continuously developed in consultation with the customers. In doing so, we use internationally recognised service management methods such as ITIL ©.
The core tasks of the Organisation and Planning Division include the continuous development and improvement of the processes and organisational structures of the Research Centre. It develops methods and tools for a centre-wide project, programme and process management. As a service unit, the division advises and supports the Executive Board and the organisational units in questions of project and process management. It conducts organisational studies and takes on project management tasks.
The business unit also oversees the central quality management system of the research centre. It advises the Executive Board and the organisational units on setting up and operating the QM/QS systems, carries out internal audits and assessments at the Centre and accompanies the organisational units until certification. Furthermore, as an IT service provider, the business unit provides, among other things, the business and human resources IT systems of the Research Centre (SAP Business Suite and individual developments) and looks after approx. 900 SAP users in various organisational units (1st and 2nd level support).
The Human Resources Division with its six departments sees itself as a central service provider in personnel matters for the scientific institutes and facilities of the Research Centre.
The law division deals with all legal and patent related affairs of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The "Technology and Operations" division offers a wide range of services in and around the buildings, on the Jülich campus, in the technical infrastructure and at the large-scale scientific and technical facilities at the various locations of the research centre.
The Safety and Radiation Protection (S) Division is responsible for coordinating all safety and radiation protection issues at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The UK team works on communicative issues that are of strategic importance for the research centre.
The Corporate Development divison (UE) forms a central interface between the institutes, Board of Directors and administration of the research center. The implementation of innovation and transfer, the supervision of national and international collaborations and the promotion of young scientists are essential services for research. Other central tasks include research planning, scientific resource management, strategy development and sustainability management at the research center.

Quality management systems are suitable instruments for ensuring and continuously improving quality in the business processes of Forschungszentrum Jülich. Internal Revision provides independent and objective auditing and consulting services to the Research Centre, which are aimed at improving business processes and ensuring the efficient, economic and proper use of funds and the protection of assets.
The revision function includes, among other things, the examination, evaluation and monitoring of the appropriateness and effectiveness of the internal control system and, in particular, of the processes running in the accounting system.
In addition, it provides auditing and advisory services to third parties on behalf of the Executive Board or the BMBF and works closely with external auditing bodies (BRH, LRH, auditors).
All activities are based on the principles of the IIR (German Institute for Internal Revision) as well as the principles of the IDW (Institute of Public Auditors in Germany) and the recommendations for the establishment of revision departments in the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres based on these principles.
