Researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Groningen seek to find the answers to these and similar questions in the CrowdING project, which has now been awarded one of the prestigious Synergy Grants by the European Research Council (ERC).

Potential and Challenges of Agrivoltaics

Europe’s First Supercomputer Reaches 1 ExaFLOP/s

JUPITER at Forschungszentrum Jülich has become the first supercomputer in Europe to reach the milestone of 1 ExaFLOP/s – equivalent to one quintillion, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 computing operations per second. At the same time, JUPITER ranks as the fourth-fastest supercomputer in the world and the most energy-efficient system in the Exascale class.

Better diagnosis of mental illness

How can closely related mental illnesses with similar symptoms be reliably distinguished from one another? As part of a German-Chinese collaboration, researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) have helped develop a decision tree aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy. The team used a combination of diagnostic techniques and artificial intelligence (AI).

ICON Team Wins Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modeling

A research team involving the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) has won the prestigious Gordon Bell Prize in the category of climate modelling. The Gordon Bell Prizes are among the most important awards in the field of high-performance computing. The jury was convinced by the team's novel approach, which enables the simulation of the Earth system with an unprecedented level of spatial detail.

External Users Gain Access to the QSolid Quantum Computer for the First Time

Jülich scientists, together with their partners from the QSolid consortium, have achieved a significant project milestone: the project team has successfully integrated the prototype of a quantum computer into the Jülich Supercomputing Centre’s infrastructure, known as JUNIQ. This marks an important step toward establishing a comprehensive German quantum ecosystem.

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz Research Fields: Energy, Matter, Information, and Earth & Environment.
