ERC Synergy Grant to Team from Jülich and Groningen

Why do crowds wait patiently – and when does the mood change? How is it that queues can suddenly break down and turn into a crush? Researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Groningen seek to find the answers to these and similar questions in the CrowdING project, which has now been awarded one of the prestigious Synergy Grants by the European Research Council (ERC).

Europe’s First Supercomputer Reaches 1 ExaFLOP/s

JUPITER at Forschungszentrum Jülich has become the first supercomputer in Europe to reach the milestone of 1 ExaFLOP/s – equivalent to one quintillion, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 computing operations per second. At the same time, JUPITER ranks as the fourth-fastest supercomputer in the world and the most energy-efficient system in the Exascale class.

Inauguration of Jade and Ruby Quantum Processors

The High-Performance Computing and Quantum Simulator hybrid (HPCQS) project has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of two Pasqal quantum processors —Jade and Ruby— respectively situated at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA).

ICON Team Wins Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modeling

A research team involving the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) has won the prestigious Gordon Bell Prize in the category of climate modelling. The Gordon Bell Prizes are among the most important awards in the field of high-performance computing. The jury was convinced by the team's novel approach, which enables the simulation of the Earth system with an unprecedented level of spatial detail.

External Users Gain Access to the QSolid Quantum Computer for the First Time

Jülich scientists, together with their partners from the QSolid consortium, have achieved a significant project milestone: the project team has successfully integrated the prototype of a quantum computer into the Jülich Supercomputing Centre’s infrastructure, known as JUNIQ. This marks an important step toward establishing a comprehensive German quantum ecosystem.

Dr Rebecka Molitor wins KlarText Prize for Science Communication

Dr Rebecka Molitor is one of the winners of the 2025 KlarText Prize for Science Communication, awarded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation. In her German article “In der Tiefsee liegt die Lösung“ which translates as “The solution lies in the deep sea”, she compellingly describes how biotechnology could help tackle one of the world’s most pressing problems: plastic pollution.

Irene Vercellino receives Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Research Fellowship

Jun.-Prof Dr Irene Vercellino from the Ernst Ruska Centre for Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy (ER-C-3) at Forschungszentrum Jülich has been awarded a Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Research Fellowship. The structural biologist is one of five early-career researchers selected for the inaugural round of fellowships from the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation, each worth €100,000.

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz Research Fields: Energy, Matter, Information, and Earth & Environment.
