Tiny Particles, Big Honours

Helmholtz Doctoral Award for Jülich Nanoparticle Researcher Timur Bikulov

How can the quality of trillions of tiny nanoparticles be reliably monitored? Jülich researcher Timur Bikulov has developed an innovative measurement method to address this challenge. On 6 November, he received the Helmholtz Doctoral Award for his doctoral research.

Researching Together, Shaping the Future: Jülich at the Falling Walls Science Summit

At the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin, Forschungszentrum Jülich is highlighting international collaboration and the transfer of research into practical applications. It will contribute its perspectives to two panel discussions: on 7 November 2026, the focus will be on capitalising on Germany’s research strengths in quantum technologies; on 8 November, the discussion will explore science diplomacy and partnerships with Africa.

A Quantum Elevator in Slow-Motion-Video

Using a new slow-motion electron camera, physicists from Regensburg, Marburg, and Jülich revealed how intense electric fields drive electrons in graphene, causing them to jump across energy gaps in a seemingly paradoxical manner. This was made possible by a novel combination of laser technology and electron microscopy.

Our 3 strategic research priorities

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy and climate

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz Research Fields: Energy, Matter, Information, and Earth & Environment.
