Master thesis: Grid Reduction Techniques for a European Power System based on High Shares of Renewable Energy Sources

The European climate goals require a significant increase of energy supply from renewable energy sources (RES), focusing primarily on wind and solar energy. However, the high temporal fluctuations associated with these sources, the spatial imbalance between locations with high generation potential and demand, as well as the various spatio-temporal correlations render the analysis of such systems challenging at the European scale. To this end, researchers have been developing methods to reduce the corresponding complexity by reducing either the temporal or spatial resolutions. In IEK-3, we have developed a rich portfolio of energy system models as well as corresponding tools and frameworks, including power system models and temporal and spatial aggregation methodologies. Nevertheless, we are seeking to improve the spatial reduction approaches with more complex methods that can better represent the original system.

Your tasks
In this thesis, the student will focus on the spatial reduction of the power system of Europe when high shares of RES are considered. Appropriate grid clustering and grid reduction methodologies should be implemented and employed for the analysis of future scenarios including the impact of the transmission grid. Besides the final analysis, the algorithms should be implemented within a respective toolbox for spatial aggregation. The following tasks summarize the outline of the thesis:

  • Literature review with respect to the area of research
  • Implementation and evaluation of different grid clustering methods with and without the inclusion of generation and demand information.
  • Implementation and evaluation of different grid reduction methods with respect to the adequate representation of the original, detailed system and security concerns.
  • Application of the developed methods for today’s and future scenarios.
  • Sensitivity analysis of the involved parameters.

Your profile

  • Very good academic records in power systems engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mathematics, physics or comparable fields
  • Interest in power systems and renewable energy sources
  • High individual motivation
  • Self-reliant and analytical way of working
  • Experience of programming in GIS and Python desirable
