Research data are the foundation of scientific discovery and an essential component of societal progress. Establishing the provenance of data, and ensuring its reusability and long-term availability increases the value, transparency and visibility of research. That is the mission of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration: the association-wide platform develops and establishes novel concepts, services and workflows that allow annotation of complex and heterogeneous research data with metadata throughout the various phases of recording and processing. This preserves the long-term value of research data, or even increases it, e.g. in the case of interdisciplinary research fields such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. The implementation of the FAIR data principles and their integration into scientist’s research routines is one important milestone during this process.

Within the Helmholtz research domain Information HMC will be anchored as a so-called “Metadata Hub” at the Institute for Advanced Simulation - Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Here we engage and actively involve the scientific community when creating tools, and adjusting standards for metadata and ontologies, ensuring our work adds value to the scientific endeavor. Doing this, our work benefits from the unique and advantageous infrastructure and the interdisciplinary and data driven research environment of the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Helmholtz-Association which offer unique opportunities for new synergies between e.g. experiment and simulation.

We are looking to recruit a

Data Steward - Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration in the Hub Information

Your Job:

  • Support of the set-up and Helmholtz-wide establishment of the HMC Hub Information at Forschungszentrum Jülich
  • Creation, organization, integration and utilization of metadata schemas within the expert communities
  • Execution of projects for the implementation of the "FAIR-data principles", supported by further HMC computer scientists
  • Development of domain-specific vocabularies, ontologies and metadata schemas
  • Co-development of a domain-specific consulting format for anchoring metadata management in the research centers
  • Support and implementation of seminars, coaching and training
  • Close cooperation with scientists from various scientific and engineering disciplines, especially in questions of metadata and in the design of projects supported by HMC
  • Close cooperation with other data stewards and supporting computer scientists
  • Preparation of position papers, best practices and publications

Your Profile:

  • University degree (Master, Diploma) in natural sciences or engineering. PhD degree is beneficial
  • Proven knowledge and programming experience in at least one high-level language as well as knowledge in script languages
  • Practical experience with data / research data management and data analysis
  • Experience with international metadata standards and their application is an advantage
  • Very independent and proactive work
  • Communication and teamwork skills as well as the ability to cooperate
  • Very good oral and written expression in German and English
  • Enjoy working in a productive multidisciplinary, international team
  • Enthusiasm for a highly topical subject with great scientific and social relevance
  • Willingness to travel regularly on business

We offer an exciting role in an up-to-date scientific context. The position is initially for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TvöD). Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade EG 13 TvöD-Bund.
