Casey Paquola receives Early Excellence in Science Award

Dr Casey Paquola from Forschungszentrum Jülich has been honoured with the Early Excellence in Science Award by the Bayer Foundation. The neuroscientist received the award in the category of Biology for her research on simulating human brain maturation – work that could help to detect abnormalities in brain development at an earlier stage. The award ceremony will take place in Leverkusen in February 2026.

ComSLI makes networks of nerve fibers visible in differently prepared tissue sections

An international team of researchers has successfully applied the recently developed imaging technique ComSLI (Computational Scattered Light Imaging) to brain sections prepared using a wide range of methods, enabling the visualization of the brain’s complex fiber network with micrometer precision. Their findings have now been published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

Quantum Materials

Electrons on the Fast Track

Ballistic electrons are among the most fascinating phenomena in modern quantum materials. Unlike ordinary electrons, they do not scatter off imperfections in the material and therefore travel from A to B with almost no resistance – like a capsule in a pneumatic tube. Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University have now developed a model that can detect this distinct flow of electrons under realistic conditions.

Our 3 strategic research priorities

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.
